HD VMD: The War Continues…
March 11th, 2008 | Written by Ginn Wei | Topic: Hardware, Technology

Although the high-definition [HD] format war seems to end recently with Blu-ray from Sony triumphed over HD-DVD from Toshiba, there is still another low-profile HD format, HD VMD, for versatile multilayer disc, from New Medium Enterprises [NME]. NME which is based in London announced the new HD format at the Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association [CEDIA] trade show 2007 held in early September last year.
The main difference between HD VMD and its 2 high profile rivals is its usage of old red-laser technology found in standard DVD to produce a high definition picture while its 2 rivals uses the new blue-laser technology that is not compatible with standard DVD. This allows its production cost to be much cheaper, about only 25% of that of Blu-ray. In fact, its price of $199 which is higher than standard DVD player but much cheaper than Blu-ray player might gives it a major advantage because it can also play standard DVD without any problem.
